Toronto Bike Plan to be completed by 2012. The plan is to have 1,000 km bike way Network, consisting of three bikeway types: Bicycle lanes; shared roadway routes; and off-road paths.

The Bike network is currently 395 km and it is managed by Transportation Services with a 5 Year Capital Plan of $69 M.

The pace of change in Toronto has been astounding. It is definitely a positive change but it has caught many motorists by surprise. For instance last summer bike lanes were introduced on Dupont street and at the same time the car lanes were reduce to one in each direction. This resulted in a daily traffic jam at 8:30 a.m. between Dundas and Dufferin while the bike lanes were barely in use. I am sure many of you would argue this will encourage drivers to consider cycling but in the near term this will likely lead to increase number of traffic jams and pollution whilst also putting additional load on adjacent streets. The key question is when driver will give up driving into Toronto and frankly many of us can’t see this happening organically.
