Summer Fun @ CNE

With two more months of school left till the kids head of into their summer vacation, parents are probably getting a head start of planning the summer activities the family is going to do. Brining the kids to the beach, the zoo or signing them up for camp is common. But what are kids excited about and looking forward to in the summer? What are they going to be talking about the whole summer? They’re going to be talking about going to The Ex.

Being the largest annual fair in Canada as well as the fourth largest fair in North America, CNE (Canadian National Exhibition), is an 18 day fair that occurs in late August. CNE attracts about 1.3 million people within the 18 days of the fair. The fair includes Canadian as well as international performers, games for children, and concerts for children/adults as well as different type of shows. There are more than 50 attractions and more than 80 games at the fair. There are over 95 food vendors from across the world at CNE as well. Every year the fair holds the Canadian International Air show. The air show is the largest show in the world that is over-the-water. The Snowbirds which is Canada’s number one precision flying team is featured in the show as well.

The 2009 exhibition was a big success. The fair is hoping for another big success for 2010 as well. In 2009, the fair ran from August 21 to September 7th. With financial help from the Government of Canada, CNE was able to add special shows and events. President Bill Clinton had made a keynote address; there were shows by Aerial Acrobatic as well as Ice Skating shows which included Elvis Stojko. Tony Hawk who is a skate board champ was at FLOWRIDER mobile Wave. There was also a soccer match between Portugal’s Benfica SL and Scotland’s Celtic. To celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the City of Toronto, CNE’s ticket price for admission onto the grounds was only $1.75. On top of the great success of the outcome of guests, the fair can be said to be the “greenest” and environmental friendly fair in North America, where they re-cycled 77.3% of solid waste within the 18 days. The organizers of the 2010 CNE are committing to make the 2010 fair even more environmental. In doing so the CNE is expanding its organic waste re-cycling program everywhere on the grounds of the fair unlike 2009 where the program only took place within the Food Building, RiibFest and Direct Energy Centre areas. Anything to do with Styrofoam will not be used at the 2010 fair. The food vendors are required to only use compostable items (plates, cups). There is an elimination of beer bottles on the grounds. Beer will be given in cans which will lower the need of plastic cups. There just some of the goals to make 2010 CNE even more environmental friendly.

CNE is a perfect place for the family to enjoy the summer together. To most families, CNE is a family tradition. Even if the kids or you want to work this summer, CNE hires between 700-900 workers as well as other employers hire. If interested the Job Fair for CNE will be held on June 20th 2010 from 10am to 2 pm at the Queen Elizabeth Building. Make sure you get to visit the amazing 18 day fair this summer which will take place from August 20th to September 6th 2010.
