If you are one of many who love to watch the World Cup on the Internet but is frustrated by the geographical restrictions set by the broadcaster then here is the information you need to circumvent this restriction.

Here are the well known broadcasters of this World Cup:

ESPN mobile TV
CBC Sports
Optus – Second largest telecommunications carrier in Australia
BBC Sport
ITV – One of the largest U.K. television networks

and here is the instructions on how to use a free proxy server  to circumvent the geographical restriction. You will not need this for CBC Sports, we are assuming you are already in Canada.

1. Install Firefox browser on your machine.  You can download a copy from firefox.com

2. Search in Google for  ’Froxy Proxy’ and download  a copy. The site is foxyproxy.mozdev.org.

3. Restart your firefox and you will see tiny icon that has a face of a fox in the bottom right hand corner of your browser.

4. Open a new browser and goto proxz.com. In the left hand menu select the country where the broadcaster is located at. You will see a list of IP address, e.g.,

91.103.185.182    80

212.118.224.149   80

Note, the first number is called the IP address and the second is known as a port number.

5.  Now, click on the fox icon, a window will pop-up. Click on ‘Add New Proxy’.  You will see the two fields called ‘Host or IP address’ and ‘Port’.  Insert your IP and Port number and click OK.

6. Right click on the FoxyBroxy icon  and select your new IP address. Now, when you browse each request will go to a proxy machine in that country and if you visit the broadcaster website it will see you as a user in that country.

7. Note, you may need to try 2-3 IP addresses before getting one that works.

Enjoy!
