St. Lawrence Market North Building
Mayor David Miller announced the winning design for the new St. Lawrence Market North Building. The design is by Adamson Associates Architects and Roger Stirk Hardbour + Partners. It is known as the “Red Design”.
This will be a four storey glass atrium building will give shoppers view of Front Street, Jarvis Street and Market Lane Park. There will be underground parking with 3 floors above the market place for court rooms and administrative offices for Court Services. The facility will meet Toronto’s Green Standard. The building cooling system will be geo-thermal, which will make it a model of energy efficiency across Toronto.

Chat Toronto

It is amazing how popular Internet chats have become over the past decade. The most popular search word used along with ‘Toronto’ is now ‘chat’. The data shows it is now twice as large as the closet term.
When you do a Google search for ‘Toronto Chat’, the result page is filled with dating and friendship sites with only a couple of exceptions including Global Mail chat. I guess they figured it is a popular search term. One friendship site claims it is getting 900,000 visits on a daily basis. It is quite impressive given GTA population is about 5.6 Million.
Now, let’s examine each site more closely. Plentyoffish.com traffic is larger that all the other sites combined with users that are mainly between 25-34 and some between 45-54 years old. Toronto Parking and Black List Numbers

The City of Toronto’s collection rate is one of the highest in Canada, approximately 15% of all parking tickets are not collected for a variety of reasons.
In 2009, of the approximately 2.8 million tickets issued, 428,651 or 15.34% of these were cancelled.
Table 1 provides a breakdown of tickets issued:
Click on table 2 and you will see a breakdown of the number of tickets that were cancelled 2008-2009. You will notice 163,370 or 5.85% were cancelled. These are mainly utility vehicles or vehicles that had by-law-exemption ! The number has grown since 2008.

Toronto’s Future
Over the next decade we will likely see some major changes in our city and that is evident by the available stats. The graph below shows the age characteristic of the population of Toronto. You notice there is a major spike in the number of people who are between 45-50.
These are the baby boomer’s who are fast approaching retirement. The question is whether they will stay a few more years or decide to return to work after a few years of retirement. Either way, the workforce will never be the same.
In order to cater for this group there will be significant growth in the health occupations. We will likely see a drop in manufacturing manufacturing has shifted more towards green products that are in high demand. Read the rest of this entry »
Toronto Poverty and Pollution
Many of us are well aware of the gap between rich and poor in this country and many of us in general believe our society is caring. This might well be true but lets examine Toronto social economic boundaries and the trend in the past couple of decades in terms of poverty and pollution.
A study done in 2004 by United Way Toronto and Canadian Council on Social Development called Poverty by Postal Code has shown a significant increase in the number of higher poverty neighbourhoods in Toronto over 20 years period. This should be alarming given the role neighbourhoods play in contributing to the overall fulfillment of social, recreational and service needs in the community.
The air pollutants listed below are the root cause of many cardio-respiratory illnesses in the city and these are generated by fossil fuel consumption.
